Tasked with updating a small studio kitchen that was crowded with over-sized appliances and cabinetry, SHAKE conceived of a utilitarian solution to bring abundant counter space and functionality. A 10’ long, custom-colored, poured-in-place concrete countertop with an integrated sink spans over two under-counter refrigerators, a freezer and dishwasher. A 24” gas range anchors the corner with a hood above, concealed by a series of ebony-stained oak open shelves that run the length of the room. Along the main window wall, painted storage cabinets were built into alcoves. The kitchen flooring and window sills feature slate reclaimed and cut down from old schoolhouse chalkboards. A gas fireplace heats the unit and is captured by a painted oak box frame that holds a dyed concrete surround.
