Our Winter Hill addition/renovation is almost hard to notice from the street, and that’s the intention. The project is designed to give space to a Somerville family as their kids grow and they feel the pinch in a neighborhood that they’ve come to love and don’t want to leave.
A shed dormer is raised up over existing stairs that desperately need head height. A new den space and bathroom are afforded natural light through a series of skylights and modestly-scaled windows. A simple extension of the existing gable roof fills out the back of the 3rd floor while respecting the surrounding context and the access to light and air. The project consists of two bedrooms (one gutted and reconfigured, the other created by the addition), a new bathroom and family room, and a large shed dormer that transforms a cramped (non-compliant) stair into a comfortable means of egress.
